FANDANGO is as much a spiritual renewal as it is a reinterpretation of some of the best soul, blues, gospel, and Americana music ever written. With a loyal flock of followers (the flock that rock) to their weekly Wednesday night residency at TOAD in Cambridge, FANDANGO fuels frontman Fred Griffeth to lead this congregation into soul and R&B righteousness! For he is like a refiner of fire and he shall purify!

“Ask not for whom the Fandan goes. It goes for thee. On Wednesday donchaknow.” –

AVA

AVA

“I am AVA: a Montana-grown musician whose original songs blend indie, jazz, and RnB influences into folk roots. My music is directly reflective of my life as a young woman in the era of late capitalist, mass-mediated North America. Themes of greed, power, (dis)connection, love, and loss permeate my playing style for a unique, contemporary sound . . . I believe that my life’s work is to harness the transformative capacity of the stage. Now more than ever, I am leveraging my songwriting to join the voices of many trying to capture, assess, and re-envision life on earth.”

This is original music—make no mistake—but if A Different Engine made a mix-tape for our own party, it would likely include songs by Husker Du, Big Star, the Posies, The Clash, Teenage Fanclub, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Superchunk, Dinosaur Jr, Guided By Voices, the Hold Steady, Nada Surf, Beach Slang, Built to Spill, the Lemonheads, and your own favorite band. And it would be a phenomenal party.

With a total of 7 albums under her belt, she has toured extensively and developed a loyal and enthusiastic following. A true storyteller, she writes from the heart and from the gut a lyrical portrait of the human condition. Songs like “Morning Margaritas,” “Drinkin’ and Gamblin’,” and “You Drank Yourself into a Corner” are certainly convincing evidence that the singer, songwriter and guitarist who has made a career out of following no one’s rules but his own is probably going to keep doing his thing until his liver lays down the law.

“I see myself as a career songwriter,” says McNeill. “And I’m very passionate about it.” Yup, there’s that word again … passion. It’s the same thing that Van Morrison has — and it’s what McNeill, who grew up in Derry in Northern Ireland, has cultivated ever since seeing Van perform at age 10 in Derry. “Seeing Van showed me that you can really occupy a song. You don’t just perform it. You live it,” adds Christian.
